Have you ever seen a photograph during a club competition and wondered how the photographer created such beautiful portrait lighting, captured a bird in flight, produced a striking black-and-white image, or prepared a professional-quality print?

The Arundel Camera Club Photography Mentoring Program will connect members who would like to develop their photography skills with experienced club members who are willing to share what they have learned.

The program is available to new—and not-so-new—Arundel Camera Club members with an active paid membership.

What Can I Learn?

Our members have experience across a wide range of photographic subjects and techniques, including:

  • – Camera settings and operation

  • – Aperture, shutter speed, ISO, and exposure

  • – Composition and visual storytelling

  • – Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop

  • – Portraiture and lighting

  • – Wildlife and bird photography

  • – Street photography

  • – Sports and action photography

  • – Night photography and light painting

  • – Black-and-white photography

  • – Printing and preparing images for competition

  • – Camera bodies, lenses, flashes, and other equipment

  • – Historical and alternative photographic processes

  • – Entering club contests and understanding judging

  • – Constructive image review and feedback

This is not a formal class with a fixed curriculum. Each mentoring relationship will be shaped by the mentee’s goals and the mentor’s experience, interests, availability, and preferred way of working.

How Does Mentoring Work?

Mentoring may take place in whatever format works best for the mentor and mentee. Possibilities include:

  • – Online sessions using Zoom

  • – In-person meetings

  • – Conversations before or after club meetings

  • – Hands-on practice during club field trips

  • – Photo walks or shooting sessions

  • – Image-review or editing sessions

  • – Email or occasional telephone conversations

The mentor and mentee will decide together how often to meet, what they would like to accomplish, and how long the mentoring relationship will continue.

What Mentoring Is—and Is Not

Mentoring is a friendly exchange between club members. Mentors volunteer their time and share their personal knowledge, experience, and opinions. They are not expected to provide professional instruction, equipment repair, unlimited technical support, or commercial services.

Participation does not guarantee that a mentor will be immediately available in every subject. Matches will depend on the interests, experience, location, availability, and preferences of participating members.

All participants are expected to communicate respectfully, honor agreed-upon schedules, and follow the Arundel Camera Club’s standards of conduct.
