The Mailman mailing list we have used for years is no longer supported by our web hosting service provider.

The Arundel Camera Club Membership Google Group is our new communication tool for membership discussions. Our goal is to test whether it can replace our mailing list with a simpler, more modern solution.

When you fill out the Membership page, you will be added to the club’s Google group.

Why use the Google Group?

Instead of maintaining separate email lists or remembering everyone’s email address:

How to use it

Starting a new discussion

Simply send an email to the group address instead of emailing individuals.

Everyone in the group will receive your message.

Replying

When you receive a message from the group:

  • – Click Reply All (or simply Reply, depending on your email program).
  • – Your response will go to the entire membership group.

Please avoid replying only to the sender unless the discussion is intended to be private.

Reading messages online

You can also visit the group webpage:

ACC Members – Google Groups

There you can:

  • – Read previous discussions
  • – Search older messages
  • – Reply from your web browser
  • – Start a new topic

Best practices

  • – Use descriptive subject lines.
  • – Keep discussions related to ACC officer business.
  • – If a topic changes significantly, start a new email with a new subject.
  • – Avoid creating separate side conversations unless necessary.

A group member with a non-Gmail address can receive and send group email without creating a Google account, but they need a Google account to fully use the Google Groups website.

You do not have to create a new Gmail address. You can create a Google account using your existing Outlook, Yahoo, Comcast, club, or other email address.

Without a Google account, you can generally:

  • – Receive group messages by email.
  • – Reply or post by emailing the group address.
  • – Unsubscribe through email links.

With a Google account connected to that same non-Gmail address, you can also:

  • – Sign in at Google Groups.
  • – Read the group’s online conversation history.
  • – Search previous discussions.
  • – Change subscription and delivery settings.
  • – View group information allowed to members.
  • – Start and participate in conversations through the website.
  • – Perform manager or owner functions if assigned those roles.

You can create the account at Create a Google Account and select Use your existing email rather than creating a Gmail address.

Important: You should register using the same email address that you put into the club’s membership form. Otherwise, Google may treat the signed-in account and the group membership as two different identities.

Please make an effort to:

  • – Send membership communications through the Google Group.
  • – Reply using the group rather than individual email whenever appropriate.
  • – Let us know what works well and what could be improved.

If this trial goes well, we hope to replace Mailman with Google Groups permanently for officer and Member communications.
