Our featured photographer this month is new club member Tim Huesgen who had a spectacular year in competition.
ACC: What inspired you to pick up a camera?
TH: Since college, I’ve used the Sierra Club weekly engagement calendar to help organize my schedule. I always loved the landscape and nature photographs in it and thought, one day I’d like to learn how to take pictures like those. Once I retired, I finally had the time to take a photography class, travel and take pictures like the ones I saw in the calendar.
ACC: How long have you been into photography?
TH:I first got into photography in 2015 when I took a class at Anne Arundel Community College.
ACC: What equipment do you shoot with?
TH: I currently shoot with a Nikon Z8.
ACC: What are your favorite subjects?
TH: Landscapes, wildlife, and creative abstracts.
ACC: What is your favorite lighting, time of day, indoors or out?
TH: Milky Way photography is a favorite. It’s always amazing and awe-inspiring to be in a dark sky location, photographing the stars in a way that isn’t possible living in the Baltimore/Washington area.
ACC: Is photography a hobby or a profession?
TH: It’s just a hobby, something I do for fun.
ACC: How long have you been in the Arundel Camera Club?
TH: Since March 2024.
ACC: Have you held any offices in the club?
TH: Not yet.
ACC: What photographers have inspired you?
TH: I’ve been fortunate to take a number of photo workshops with some incredible photographers, most notably Bryan Peterson and Marc Adamus. Their work, teaching, and vision, have been very eye opening and influential.
ACC: How would you describe yourself?
TH: I’ve made my living as a musician for the past 40 plus years. I see many similarities between music and photography. In music, you’re organizing sound waves in a creative and pleasing way. In photography, you do the same but with light waves. To be successful at each you need both a technical skill and a creative vision. In many ways, photography has been like learning a new instrument.
ACC: How would you describe your photography?
TH: Photography has been a great way for me to travel and experience amazing places from a unique perspective. These days I see a lot of people arrive at a beautiful iconic location, look around for a few minutes, take a selfie and move on. Photography forces you to slow down and experience these places more deeply through the lens of a camera.
