SUMMARY:Field Trip - Trains of Western Maryland
DESCRIPTION:Meet at 1 pm for 1 hour private tour.\nTravel time from club location 70 minutes. \nThe Museum complex houses our extensive collection of WM artifacts and memorabilia\, a voluminous photo archive\, archival material directly from the Western Maryland Railway\, and an extensive railroader’s library featuring historical and technical publications about the WM and other roads of the region. Major exhibits include the callers boards from Hagerstown\, Md.\, and Ridgeley\, W.Va.\, and the CTC panel for most of the Lurgan Subdivision. \nIntegral parts of the organization are model railroad layouts. A permanent N-scale layout\, which represents the Union Bridge to the Twin Bridges (west of Thurmont) section of the East Subdivision of the Western Maryland Railway in the 1950s\, is housed in the Museum. There is also a 4 x 16 foot HO scale layout on display in the depot building \nThe organization also supports the modular group’s HO-scale layout. This group has built and continues to build numerous interconnected modules depicting scenes along the former Western Maryland Railway. The modular group represents the Society at train shows and certain Society and community events. The layout can be as large as 30 x 70 feet. \nIn the 125 years of its operation as an independent railroad the Western Maryland built a reputation as a truly “Fast Freight Line.” From the laborers on the docks at Port Covington to the top brass\, Western Maryland people were noted for their skill in the transportation field and the pride that showed in every aspect of their work. Today\, the WM is a fond memory\, its remnants serving as important links in the CSX Transportation chain plus various shortline railroads. Its memory survives\, however\, in the Western Maryland Railway Historical Society\, Inc. \nThe Western Maryland Railway Historical Society was founded in 1967 for the purpose of preserving a portion of America’s rich railroad history. We do this by providing programs for community organizations\, publishing educational materials drawn from our collection\, supporting activities related to railroading\, and by making historical records available to groups and individuals researching railroad history. With the cooperation of the Western Maryland Railway\, the Society established a Museum in Union Bridge in the buildings that once served as the station\, the company’s main offices and express shed. The entire complex was built in 1902. The WMRHS is not affiliated with CSX\, its predecessors\, or the Genessee & Wyoming Railroad (Maryland Midland Railway) in any way.

SUMMARY:Program - Allart Kok - Macro Photography
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on 18 September at 7Pm at the Severna Park Baptist Church for a presentation on Macro Photography by our very own Allart Kok. \nThis presentation is not suitable for audience members who shun crawly critters and tremble in the presence of creatures with hairy bodies\, lots of eyes\, and six\, eight\, or even more legs.  Wings are optional.  Bugs are what this presenter’s macrophotography is all about . \nMacrophotography is the most democratic of photographic subjects. It is very accessible: it does not require an expensive macro lens; it does not require travel expenses\, being accessible in one’s own back yard; and it can reveal alien worlds – many that we might not otherwise notice.  It has been said that the joy in life comes in surprises and\, in photographing the smallest living things\, we often discover marvelous details that we were unaware of when taking a photo. The macroscopic natural world is an incredible teacher of the intricacies and dynamics of life.    \nTo be sure\, this presentation is all about accessing macrophotography\, whether in a casual or dedicated mode. Bugs are the subject\, but you can take the core content and photograph watch gears\, coins\, eyeballs\, bubbles or flowers if you prefer. \nKok has been photographing living things since falling in love with the cicada emergence of 1970.  They descended on the Baltimore area in huge numbers\, screaming\, buzzing and procreating before finally piling up\, en masse\, against the curbs along the streets as Kok trudged home from school.  His father’s old 1937 Exacta became his ticket into a life-long appreciation of insects and nature photography.  While his career in the biological sciences veered into the biomedical world\, a love of nature\, most notably that presenting itself in local parks and back yards\, has always been sustained.  These days while his faithful mutt Boh keeps him hiking in the Maryland hinterlands\, Kok always carries full camera gear\, including his lovely and talented long armed lens\, Bertha. After all\, one NEVER knows when or where the winged (or unwinged) jewels of nature will make their appearance\, be they arthropod or bird.

SUMMARY:Anne Arundel County Fair Photography Contest
DESCRIPTION:For the second year in  a row\, John Milleker\, Jr. has taken the role of the Chairperson of Photography for the Anne Arundel County Fair. \nThe vision is that the Arundel Camera Club should be in charge of their own county fair’s photography contest and exhibit. \nThe club has been afforded a very interesting opportunity that will enable us to reach many more photography enthusiasts in the county with the side benefit of  potentially recruiting new club members. \nDuring the fair\, if we can manage the coverage\, we will be able to set up a table in the photography exhibit area with information and flyers leading new interested photographers to us.  \nLast year we had fantastic support from our club and we will need the whole club’s support again this year.  \nIf you are interested and can help\, please let John know! We will need helpers to receive and sort the entries\, as well as hang them on the exhibit walls (September 7th & 8th). During the fair\, September 10th through September the 14th we will need enthusiastic club members to be on hand to discuss the club with interested parties and hand out flyers and business cards. On Monday September 15th we could use help with the pickup of photographs and ribbons.  \nSchedule\n\nSunday September 7th\, 2-5pm – Receiving Photography Entries & sort/hang\nMonday September 8th\, 2-7pm  – Receiving Photography Entries & sort/hang\nTuesday\, September  9th\, 10am-7pm – Judging Day\nWednesday\, September 10th 5-10pm – Arundel Camera Club Table & Handouts\nThursday\, September 11th\, 5-10pm – Arundel Camera Club Table & Handouts\nFriday\, September 12th\, 5-11pm – Arundel Camera Club Table & Handouts\nSaturday\, September 13th\, 9am-11pm – Arundel Camera Club Table & Handouts\nSunday\, September 14th\, 9am-8pm – Arundel Camera Club Table & Handouts\nMonday\, September 15th\, 2-7pm – Removing photos\, sorting and pickup w/ribbons & awards\n\nIf you can help out we really appreciate it\, please let John know which day/days and times you may be able to cover. Last year\, the fair waived the entry fees for our volunteers. John\, or one of the other club officers\, will be on site for the receiving and pickup dates as well as the majority of the fair opening dates as well. \nThank you! \nJohn Milleker Jr.

DESCRIPTION:Nearby Hotels and Camping \nBest Western\, Holiday Inn\, Hartman Center (Camping\, rental cabins)\, there is primitive camping at Reeds Gap State Park. \nFood\nIn the morning I sometimes grab breakfast at the Honey Creek Inn\, it is your typical breakfast fare.  After the cave trip I usually grab dinner at the Bel-Vue Inn – this is your classic rural PA cafe with home cooked meals typical of rural Americana.  If we want something more upscale for dinner there is Shy Bear Brewing.  It is rural PA though\, so upscale here is about mid-level what you’d get elsewhere. \nIf you’re light on breakfast but want a good cup of coffee\, I highly recommend East End Coffee in Reedsville. \nSaturday Schedule\nWe meet at Rutters in Milroy at 10am and then drive to the cave from there.  It is a ~10min drive away.  We park about 200ft from the cave entrance.  We will be in the cave as long as we want\, but have to be off the property no later than about 7:30pm. \nThe Cave\nAlexander Caverns is an ex-commercial show cave so it has all of the trails and handrails\, but no lights.  As such you can get as dirty as you want\, or stay completely clean.  The entrance has ~60 stairs to go down.  From there it is all walking passage anywhere from 10-30 feet wide and 7 to 30 feet tall\, all very heavily decorated.  Cave is 50 degrees or so\, 100% humidity\, bring layers.  If you decide to get dirty then definitely bring a spare change of clothes.  Hope and I can provide helmets and lights – but try to bring your own headlamp if you happen to have one.  Nothing fancy is needed. \nCave Snacks\, Etc.\nBring yourself a lunch: a sandwich\, candy bars\, etc.  Hope and I will bring extra just in case\, and we will bring a small stove to make coffee\, tea\, etc.  As a reminder there are no bathrooms in the cave.  If you need to pee you can do so in the stream passage.  Anything else\, unless its an emergency\, will involve having to drive somewhere.  Nearest bathroom is the Rutter we meet at\, about 10 minutes away. \nWhat Photo Gear to Bring\nYou’ll want your camera\, a tripod\, and your lenses.  I typically use my 16-35mm wide angle\, or a 50mm\, or a 100mm macro lens.  You can pack it in a normal camera bag\, Hope and I will bring plastic drop cloths to set things down on. \nIf you have your own strobes and a sync device please bring them.  I have strobes and a sync device\, but not enough for everyone.  This is the only gear that may be at risk of damage.  Strobes are often set on whatever rock\, mud slope\, etc that you can find.  The chance of them rolling off and falling can be high.  I have gotten good at keeping strobes intact\, but I may NO guarantees on this.   \nOther Stuff I Will Bring\nI will have some flashbulbs\, and flashguns for them.  I will also have some umbrellas and diffusers and stands for them.   \nMy Plan\nI have one or two photos I would like to get with my large format 4×5 camera.  I will likely use one of these as an example photo.  Once we get in the cave we enter a space called the Cathedral Room.  Here I will setup my photo that I want to take and explain the process to acquaint everyone with how cave photography works.  This should take\, at most\, one hour.  After that everyone can spread through the cave to take photos as they wish – or we can stay all together.  We will play it by ear.  I will show you both a wide angle shot (the cave equivalent of a landscape)\, and a macro photo of crystals and pearls. \nSince the group is small enough\, we can take an hour or two before we leave and do the wet section of the cave.  This section has a large river passage that you traverse by boat.  We will not be taking photos here\, but it’s worth seeing.  It is a very unique experience.   \nRoster\nWe have a full group.  Some folks from a book publishing company may be joining us.  We can maybe add more people but I need a good bit of heads up (no later than 10 days before).  Right now I have the following: \n\nRick Smith* (keyholder)\nRyan Maurer*\nHope Brooks*\nCheryl Kerr\nJackie Colestock\nJackie Colestock+1\nAl Kok\nDoug Wood\n\n*  Trip Leaders \nI look forward to see y’all soon!
