SUMMARY:Program - Bob Webber - Abstract Photography
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday night 19 March 2026 we will hosting our very own Bob Webber for a talk on abstract photography at the Severna Park Baptist Church starting at 7:00 PM. This talk is in preparation for our April contests theme. \nBob has been member of the Arundel Camera Club for over a decade having and has served as the Vice President of Contest and as a critical member of the contests committee for years. He has a distinctive eye and style for photography unique within the club. He has earned Unlimited status in Digital\, Color Prints\, and Monochrome Prints. \nBob built his first camera out of a cardboard box\, tracing paper and his grandmother’s Opera glasses. He started serious hobby photography with an Praktica SLR in 1970\, working with black and \nwhite film and developing and printing his own work. Later he also tried color slides with the Cibachrome process. \nIn 2001 Bob moved to digital photography and got serious about the art of photography in 2014 when he joined the Arundel Camera Club.  \nHis interest in creative symmetrical designs provoked the question: What is that and how was it made? This has led some folk to think he knows something about Abstract Photography.  \nTo wit Abstract Photos captures something outside the normal view of the subject such as the patterns\, shapes or colors in such a way that these attributes greatly dominate the original traditional view. Abstracts are not photos of things but of some attribute of the subject. In some cases\, there is no traditional view left\, only features such as shapes colors and patterns etc. Now is the time to find out if my ideas are correct.

SUMMARY:Program - Glen Thompson - Capturing Life on The Chesapeake
DESCRIPTION:Join us at 7PM on Thursday January 8 at the Severna Park Baptist for a talk Photographing the Chesapeake Bay: Techniques\, Challenges\, and Discoveries a never- ending project by Glenn Thompson. This includes the camera’s\, lens and settings I used on each image.\n \nA lifelong Maryland resident\, Glenn focuses his photography on the beauty and working life of the Chesapeake Bay. From his kayak\, he captures watermen at dawn\, migratory birds in flight\, and the everyday moments that define the bay he loves. His volunteer work as a crewmember aboard the skipjacks Dee of St. Mary’s and Wilma Lee have also given him a unique vantage point to photograph the Bay’s maritime heritage. \nGlen has been a member of the Bowie–Crofton Camera Club since 2013 and has twice been named Master Photographer of the Year. He is also a member of the Muddy Creek Art Guild and continues to volunteer as a crew on the Chesapeake skipjacks Dee of St. Mary’s and Wilma Lee. \nYou can find Glen’s photographs at https://glenn-thompson.pixels.com/

SUMMARY:Program - Beth Haubach - Shooting with Abandon
DESCRIPTION:Join us at 7PM on Thursday November 13 at the Severna Park Baptist for a talk by Beth Haubach on Shooting with Abandon. \nTo watch it remotely\, just go to to our open FaceBook group where we will broadcast the talk https://www.facebook.com/groups/arundelcameraclub \nShooting with Abandon\nShooting with Abandon explores the art and practice of photographing abandoned places and objects\, with a focus on finding beauty in imperfection and decay. \nI’ll discuss key shooting considerations: lighting\, lens choices\, and essential equipment. I’ll also cover techniques like light painting\, long exposures\, and HDR to create dramatic effects. \nI’ll share my approach to photographing these spaces and editing techniques\, from using HDR for balanced exposure to enhancing the vintage feel of a photo by adding imperfections. \nLastly\, I’ll cover the safety and legality issues that apply when shooting abandoned buildings\, “urbexing\,” and I’ll provide ideas on places where you can practice some of the shooting techniques locally\, along with some notable locations in the Mid-Atlantic region. \nBeth Haubach Biography\nMy interest in photography began when I found my dad’s Nikon camera that he’d purchased in Tokyo while serving in the Army during the Korean War. Over the years\, this interest has increased to the point I’ve owned and outgrown several cameras.  I honed my photography skills on the soccer pitch\, the lacrosse field\, and the hockey rink but I’m equally at home in the field shooting landscapes and wildlife; capturing street scenes\, architecture\, vintage pieces\, or mural art; or even trekking to “unsavory” places to photograph abandoned locations.  \nI’ve had the wonderful opportunity to work with Capital Photography Center (CPC) “behind” the scenes and\, more recently\, as an instructor for Capital Photography Center. These positions have allowed me access to many amazing and accomplished photographers and instructors\, which ultimately helped me grow in my skills and confidence as a photographer.  \nI relish the chance to capture the beauty of a sunset or the awe of a landscape\, a spider in its glistening web\, a dew-covered flower in the garden\, a gritty street scene\, or the allure of a vintage piece. I have discovered in recent years my true passion lies in creating digital art from those photos. I’ve also fallen in love with creating abstract images\, particularly those that result from adding oil to water\, or the meticulous placement of water drops to capture a subject refracted in a water drop.  \nThere is something incredibly rewarding about the creative process. While the subject may differ\, the outcome is ultimately about the variety and range of emotions I can elicit from the viewer just by catching that perfect moment in time.

SUMMARY:Program - Allart Kok - Macro Photography
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on 18 September at 7Pm at the Severna Park Baptist Church for a presentation on Macro Photography by our very own Allart Kok. \nThis presentation is not suitable for audience members who shun crawly critters and tremble in the presence of creatures with hairy bodies\, lots of eyes\, and six\, eight\, or even more legs.  Wings are optional.  Bugs are what this presenter’s macrophotography is all about . \nMacrophotography is the most democratic of photographic subjects. It is very accessible: it does not require an expensive macro lens; it does not require travel expenses\, being accessible in one’s own back yard; and it can reveal alien worlds – many that we might not otherwise notice.  It has been said that the joy in life comes in surprises and\, in photographing the smallest living things\, we often discover marvelous details that we were unaware of when taking a photo. The macroscopic natural world is an incredible teacher of the intricacies and dynamics of life.    \nTo be sure\, this presentation is all about accessing macrophotography\, whether in a casual or dedicated mode. Bugs are the subject\, but you can take the core content and photograph watch gears\, coins\, eyeballs\, bubbles or flowers if you prefer. \nKok has been photographing living things since falling in love with the cicada emergence of 1970.  They descended on the Baltimore area in huge numbers\, screaming\, buzzing and procreating before finally piling up\, en masse\, against the curbs along the streets as Kok trudged home from school.  His father’s old 1937 Exacta became his ticket into a life-long appreciation of insects and nature photography.  While his career in the biological sciences veered into the biomedical world\, a love of nature\, most notably that presenting itself in local parks and back yards\, has always been sustained.  These days while his faithful mutt Boh keeps him hiking in the Maryland hinterlands\, Kok always carries full camera gear\, including his lovely and talented long armed lens\, Bertha. After all\, one NEVER knows when or where the winged (or unwinged) jewels of nature will make their appearance\, be they arthropod or bird.
